Abstract:
Gray whales migrate annually from their winter breeding grounds in the lagoons of Baja California, Mexico to their Arctic summer feeding grounds in the Bering, Beaufort, and Chukchi Seas. The migration corridors used by most gray whales are within 10 kilometers of the United States' Pacific coast. Their proximity to the coastline and many heavily urbanized areas increases the likelihood of interaction with vessels, fishing gear, pollutants, noise disturbance, and other anthropogenic threats. Gray whales have the highest number of reported entanglements and vessel collisions of any large whale species along the United States Pacific coast. Using ArcGIS, a spatio-temporal model and animated video were developed to aid in risk assessment. This model estimates the location and density of the majority of migrating gray whales on any date within the migration period, which generally runs from December through June.
Purpose:
This model will be used by managers and other users of the ocean environment to assess the risk of certain threats to gray whales by analyzing their co-occurrence with vessels, fishing gear, marine debris, pollution, and noise.
